Active acne is a skin condition, which has plugged pores resulting in blackheads, whiteheads and inflamed pimples (pustules). This typically results in painful, inflamed lesions that can appear on the face, chest, back, limbs and virtually any other part of the body. It often starts in puberty, but it can affect those in their late teens and adults too. 80% of teenagers get acne in some form and it can also occur in pregnancy – typically, whenever there are hormonal changes in the body. Acne isn’t medically dangerous; in our experience acne can be spoil our overall appearance and upsetting to the people because it may caused distress and untreated acne can leave permanent scars.
Acne occurs when the pores on skin are blocked with either oil, bacteria or dead skin. Pores are the opening to follicles and acne will form when they produce too much oil or sebum, blocking of dead skin cells or when bacteria accumulates in the pore. A combination of all three will contribute to trigger of acne.
Hormonal changes are the most common trigger for acne, either in puberty or through pregnancy. Poor personal hygiene can also contribute. A diet that is high in fat or sugars and certain medications, such as the contraceptive pill and corticosteroids, can also trigger acne.
