Laser treatment is the most popular technique used of tattoo removal these days. We use a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser to fade and remove tattoos. This has two separate wavelengths so that different colored inks can be treated. Laser is passed through the skin, they work by targeting the ink with pulses of highly concentrated light that break the ink into tiny fragments. The ink is broken down by the laser into smaller molecules, which can be absorbed by the body and disposed of. However, this isn’t all done with just one treatment. The more treatments you have, the more the laser can penetrate the skin to destroy the ink.
WHAT’S DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SURGICAL OR CHEMICAL AND LASER TATTOO REMOVAL TREATMENT?Tattoo removal is difficult. The pigment is sealed in by a tough network of collagen fibre. The layer in which the pigment is trapped can be surgically cut away, then replaced with skin grafts, leaving scar material both where the tattoo was and where the graft was taken from.
Tattoo pigment can also be removed through chemically destroying the tissue containing the pigment with concentrated salt, acids or alkali solutions but the surrounding skin is inevitably damaged, significant scarring is to be expected and the pigment is not always removed.
The only way to remove the pigment effectively, without damaging the surrounding tissues, is with Q-switched laser technology. It’s a proven technique with more than 20 years of evidence behind the techniques. It involves far less risk of skin damage than other techniques and we are experts.
HOW WILL WE REMOVE YOUR TATTOO?We need to meet you and your tattoo for initial assessment. This is your chance to check that laser tattoo removal is right for you and your tattoo.
The procedure requires a consultation before. Medical history and any medications you are taking need to be discussed, as well as your expectations. We’ll warn you of any potential side effects and give you a clear pre and post treatment plan for your skin. And of course, we’ll be there if you think you are having a problem post treatment.
HOW WE WORK ON TATTOO REMOVAL?Laser is passed through the skin, they work by targeting the ink with pulses of highly concentrated light that break the ink into tiny fragments. The ink is broken down by the laser into smaller molecules, which can be absorbed by the body and disposed of. However, this isn’t all done with just one treatment. The more treatments you have, the more the laser can penetrate the skin to destroy the ink. Each treatment can take just a few minutes, to about an hour depending on the size of the tattoo.
DO ALL TATTOOS RESPOND TO TREATMENT?The laser treatment can be effective on a whole range of colors but works best on black, red and blue ink.
WHAT IS INVOLVED?Even though the treatment doesn’t actually damage your skin; it’s worth being warned that your skin may feel as though it’s has a little bit of burning or stinging during the treatment. The laser tattoo removal treatment creates a superficial skin wound. Some clients may experience bruising or swelling. There is immediate whitening on the treated area, which usually lasts for several minutes. Some clients may develop blisters, crusts, and scabs within 8 to 72 hours, which may last for 1 to 2 weeks or more. The treated areas may be pink or pale after the scab disappears. Scarring, which can be hypertrophic or even keloid, can occur but is exceptionally rare. Reduced or excess skin pigment in the treated area may occur. Whole healing process may usually complete within 2-6 weeks.
IS TATTOO REMOVAL TREATMENT PROCEDURE PAINFUL?It is uncomfortable, like having the tattoo put on. You may choose to use an anesthetic cream on the treated skin area.
The tattoo will feel hot for a while afterwards, and it will probably be red and swollen for the rest of the day. Very dark, or large professional tattoos, might remain tender and swollen for a few days. Occasionally this is followed by a scab or crust. The tattoo will be get lighten after or sometimes will not look a lot different, but over the next few weeks it will fade a little. This may not be obvious until you return to compare it with the photographs.
WILL ANY UNWANTED EFFECTS INVOLVED?Risks and complications are rare and typically mild; however, complications can occasionally occur in certain situations.
Scarring is unlikely but can occur.
If it does occur it is usually in the form of some change in texture of the skin. This is more likely if you pick any scabs. There can also be some loss of natural skin pigment in the treated area, which usually improves over time. The chances of it happening can be reduced by keeping the area as pale as possible throughout the course of treatment.
WHAT SHOULD YOU DO AFTER LASER TATTOO REMOVAL?It is very important that you follow the post treatment care advice carefully after laser treatment for tattoo removal to help make the procedure as successful as possible and to reduce the risk of complications.
Post-treatment advice may include:
- Keep the treated area clean and dry while it is healing. You may apply a thin coating of antibiotic cream.
- Blistering may occur 8 hours after treatment. Do not be alarmed, blisters heal very well and are part of the normal healing process. Blisters indicate your immune system is healing the area and beginning to remove the ink from your tattoo. It is natural for blisters to pop, and this helps the skin to heal faster in many cases. Continue to put antibiotic cream over the blisters once they have popped.
- Do not picking at any scabs or crusting that appears on the skin of the treated area, as this can increase the potential for scarring. And, Shaving or scrub should be avoided in the treated area until it is completely healed. This could damage or cause pigmentation problems to your skin.
- Feel free to shower at least 2 hours after the treatment, but take care to avoid high pressure water hitting the treated area. Baths, hot tubs, swimming pool, or any form of soaking are not recommended until all blistering and scabbing are completely healed, as they may increase the risk of infection.
- Do not scrubbing the area when showering or bathing.
- Always use sunscreen. Do not exposing the area treated to the sun without a sunscreen to reduce the risk of disturbing pigmentation in that area. A high factor sun block should be used daily to protect the skin.
- Itching is very common due to the dehydrating effect of the laser treatment. Applying the prescribed skin care products according to the regimen specifically designed for you to calm any irritation you might experience.
- Please refer to our consultant for the ingredients and types of cream if you have any inquiries.
- Do not wear makeup or any cream or medication on or near the treated area.
- Do not use any other active skin products, such as prescription Retin A.
- Staying out of public swimming pools, sauna and etc while the treatment site is fresh.
Some people may not be suitable while others please advise the technician if any of the following apply to you :
- Pregnant or breast feeding
- Suffer from Diabetes or any immune disorder, including HIV
- Have a tendency to Keloid scarring or skin darkening with injury
- Use products containing Retinol/Vitamin Ain the last 12 months
- Have had recent surgery or laser skin treatment
- Experience eczema or have a history of skin sensitivity to light or scarring problems, an active herpes (cold sores) infection or other skin infections such as impetigo at the site to be treated. These conditions should be individually assessed and treatment may continue where the underlying condition is addressed
- Recently tanned skin should not be treated. Active melanocytes (the cells which produce melanin) are readily targeted by Q-switched lasers and the damage done is likely to lead to long-term hypopigmentation
- Darker skin-types may be treated but all risks outlined above increase with the darkness of the skin. For example, it may not be helpful to remove a black tattoo from dark skin and leave in its place a light patch with the same shape
